Let’s Talk About Buttock Augmentation

Buttock Augmentation

Buttock augmentation has been one of the fastest growing cosmetic procedures in the U.S. over the past couple of years. As such, it’s interesting that there aren’t very many resources for those who may be interested in the procedure.

The interest in the procedure has likely developed because that part of the body is having a moment in U.S. popular culture. Between Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian, the buttocks are becoming one of the key areas for women, much like the breasts were in the 80s and 90s. It’s no wonder that the number of buttock implant procedures doubled between 2013 and 2014 (though it’s worth mentioning that breast augmentation is still the most popular cosmetic procedure by far, eclipsing buttock augmentations by a factor of 20).

Now, to the specifics of the procedure. Buttock augmentation can be achieved in two different ways: via implants, or via a fat transfer procedure that takes fat from another part of the body and places it in the buttocks for increased volume. (The fat transfer procedure is often referred to as a “Brazilian butt lift”.)

As with any other augmentation procedures, shape is just as important as size. Depending on a patient’s physique, the buttocks can also be raised and sculpted to give a younger appearance. Buttock implants can usually offer more fullness and roundness than a fat transfer, but they also increase the recovery time and post-procedure discomfort. For those without adequate fat stores for a transfer, implants are usually the only option. It’s also worth noting that buttock implants are made from a semi-solid material that makes them more robust than breast implants, and which means that buttock implants are permanent and usually require no further maintenance or replacement.

Recovery from a buttock augmentation procedure usually involves two weeks of recovery with minimal sitting, and 2-4 weeks of additional recovery time without strenuous exercise, after which the patient can return to his or her previous lifestyle.
