The Truth About Botox

The Truth About Botox

If you’ve been considering getting some Botox, you may be wondering, where does the science stand now—is Botox considered safe? Every year, tens of thousands of patients reap the benefits of Botox procedures, and yet, many who are unfamiliar with the procedure may not be sure about its health effects. Here we discuss the truth about Botox.

Botox cosmetic injection treatments have helped many of our patients look years younger, often over their lunch break. Unlike more complicated surgical procedures, wrinkle reduction with Botox cosmetic injections can be done right in our St. Charles office. You can receive this simple and effective treatment in just one visit and should begin to see the results in a few days.

Following a treatment session, you will be able to enjoy smooth, younger looking skin for up to four months. Botox cosmetic injection treatments may be ideal for patients who are not quite ready for face lift surgery or blepharoplasty, but who still desire a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

So how does it work?

In cosmetic applications, injection of botulinum toxin can be used to prevent development of wrinkles, by immobilizing the facial muscles. Following treatment, results are usually seen within 3–5 days, however it can take up to 2 weeks to see full results.

The most common side effect, occurring in less that 1% of patients, is pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site, which usually subsides within a few days.

Those allergic to the botulinum toxin should obviously refrain from the procedure, as should those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Is it safe?

A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association: Dermatology found that the risks of Botox are even lower than doctors had previously assumed.

“We strongly suspected the rates were going to be low, but we were pleasantly surprised that they were as low as they were,” said study lead author Dr. Murad Alam, a dermatologist at Northwestern University in Illinois.

So, when you’re considering Botox as a nonsurgical wrinkle-eliminating procedure, let the science prevail, which shows that the procedure is perfectly safe.
