Plastic Surgery Trends: Stats from the New ASPS Report

The new report of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons came out last month, showing some interesting insights into where plastic surgery is headed based on data from 2017.

Here’s our breakdown of the most interesting developments:

  • As in previous years, breast augmentation continued to top the list at the number one spot followed by liposuction in second place. In 2017, they were closely followed by nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and tummy tucks.
  • Minimally invasive procedures actually grew at a faster rate than surgical procedures (2% for the former vs. 1% for the latter). The top minimally invasive procedures were Botox, soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion.
  • Breast reduction procedures increased by 11% in 2017.

“Breast reductions are consistently reported as one of the highest patient satisfaction procedures because it positively affects a woman’s quality of life. It addresses both functional and aesthetic concerns,” said ASPS President Jeffrey E. Janis, MD.

  • Cellulite treatments are up nearly 20% from the previous year.
  • Lip reductions were down 70%, showing what is perhaps the waning of a fad.
  • Surprisingly, buttock implants were also down by 56% in 2017 as compared to 2016. However, buttock augmentation with fat grafting was up 10%, showing a preference for this more natural version of the same procedure.
