Types of Ear Surgery Procedures
Ear surgery is performed in order to set prominent ears back and closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. It can also repair earlobes that have been torn or stretched due to a piercing. Along with protruding ears, many other ear problems can be helped with ear surgery, including “lop ear,” which is when the tip of the ear seems to fold down and forward; “cupped ear,” which is usually a very small and folded ear; and “shell ear,” which is when the curve in the outer rim and natural folds and creases are missing. For patients who have earlobes that have been damaged by a torn or stretched piercing, we provide earlobe repair surgery. This is a relatively simple procedure that involves removing the skin that has grown over the split, and suturing the earlobe back together. In most cases, the earlobe can even be re-pierced, provided that it is given an appropriate amount of time to heal and the piercing is not done in a place that has been weakened by the previous damage.
Good Candidates for Ear Surgery
Ear surgery is usually performed on children between the ages of four and fourteen. A person’s ear cartilage is stable enough for correction usually around five years old. A younger child should ideally be able to communicate their feelings and be able to follow instructions. Correction of even minor deformities can have a positive impact on self-esteem. Ear surgery is possible for adult patients as well. Adults should be non-smokers or have other medical conditions that could impair their healing.
