What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition that affects men causing puffy, over-developed, or enlarged breasts. The enlargement is usually due to hormone imbalance, heredity conditions, disease, steroid use, or certain medications. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 50%-60% of adolescent males will suffer from gynecomastia.
What is gynecomastia/male breast reduction surgery?
A male breast reduction flattens the chest area by reducing breast size. There are two ways to achieve your desired results.
- Liposuction: When excess breast tissue is present, liposuction may be used to remove the tissue.
- Excision: Excess breast tissue may cause stretched, sagging skin in the breast area. In cases where this is present, excision is recommended, and excess breast tissue and skin is surgically removed. If areola size reduction is desired, an excision method is necessary.
- Both techniques, liposuction, and excision, may be used to achieve optimal results for some patients.
Is a gynecomastia procedure right for me?
Gynecomastia can cause physical and emotional discomfort, hindering the self-confidence of those affected. A gynecomastia procedure is customized to a patient’s specific needs and may be right for you if you are looking to obtain a more masculine chest contour.
The procedure is an option for you and best performed on men who:
- You are in good health
- You are bothered by an enlarged breast area
- Have realistic expectations
- Do not take steroids
