Each year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) releases a report compiling the cosmetic procedures performed in the US over the previous year. These statistics look at what procedures patients are choosing, giving us insight about ongoing plastic surgery trends.
While surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures continue to increase year over year, the types of procedures are widening, showing more diversity and more options for patients. As stated on their website, ASPS President David H. Song, MD, MBA, FACS, states, “Patients have more options than ever, and working closely with their surgeon, they’re able to focus on specific target areas of the body to achieve the look they desire.”
Breast surgical procedures, however, continue to lead the lists for both women and men. Breast procedures come in many forms. Breast augmentations, while trending slightly less than last year, are still in the top five cosmetic surgical procedures. Breast lifts, different from augmentation, have risen 89% since the previous year. Moreover, breast reduction surgeries are on the rise, with men accounting for 40% of aesthetic breast reduction surgeries. In men, breast reduction is done to help tighten and tone problem areas, especially in men who face genetic challenges with the size and shape of their breasts.
Breast reconstruction is also on the rise, up 4 percent since last year and up 35 percent since 2000. More women facing lumpectomy or mastectomy due to breast cancer diagnosis are utilizing breast reconstruction through several plastic surgery techniques to restore near normal shape, size and appearance of the breast.
Along with breast lifts, other lifts are increasing in plastic surgery trends. Lower body lifts, upper arm lifts and buttock lifts are increasing by the thousands. While facial lifts remain popular, they’ve fallen out of the top five most performed cosmetic surgical procedures. This is likely due to the diversification we’re seeing in the specific focus areas patients want to address with their surgeons.
Rounding out the top cosmetic surgical procedures after breast augmentation are: liposuction, nose reshaping or rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, and tummy tuck surgeries, also known as abdominoplasty.
Minimally invasive procedures are also on the rise, due to lower costs and the fact that they are indeed less invasive than a surgical procedure. The number of available providers is also rising, but this doesn’t always mean they are a board-certified, ASPS surgeon. Be sure to do your research when undergoing any cosmetic treatment. While it is not a surgical procedure, it is still a cosmetic one and results may vary.
The top five minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were Botox, also known as botulinum toxin type A, soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion.
Buttock treatments are also on the rise, both figuratively and literally. Buttock lifts were up 36 percent in the last year with buttock augmentation with fat grafting and buttock implants at the top and the bottom of the top three procedures respectively. Buttock implants were the fastest growing type of any cosmetic operation in 2015.
